The Umlazi Township, within the eThekwini Municipality is located approximately 17 kilometres South of Durban’s Central Business District and the Southern Industrial Basin. The area of Umlazi is 4 481.7 hectares and forms part of eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu Natal.. Umlazi has inherited the dismal effects of apartheid planning policies characterised by spatial and economic isolation. This area experiences the typical township problems; however they are magnified due to its extent (second largest township in South Africa).

The population of Umlazi is estimated at 1, 677, 556. Although Umlazi still has challenges in terms of the unemployment but it has grown economically and with the emergence of the black middle class it is important to focus on them and showcase different products to them while creating employment and creating new business opportunities for uMlazi.

The inaugural Umlazi Festival & Expo is positioned to be “the” event that draws together local people, business, youth, community organisations, government, media and visitors from all over KwaZulu-Natal & South Africa and beyond on an annual basis to celebrate the community’s richness, diversity, enterprise and heritage. The Umlazi Festival & Expo is also referred to as “NUZ” Festival because of its unique car registration number plates, will enables the people of Umlazi and surrounding areas to come together in a fun, relaxed environment infused with a positive spirit.

The NUZ Festival combines an entertainment programme including music, traditional dance, an exhibition of arts and crafts and other local products, a tourism expo, an outdoor area for food and drink vendors selling traditional as well as branded fare, a youth empowerment zone and a business expo for the corporate, SMME and government sectors.

The Umlazi Festival and Expo will take place on the 4th-6th April 2014 at Umlazi’s King Zwelithini stadium precent. It will combine the hall, stadium as well as the stadium outer fields, which were recently upgraded as part of the FIFA 2010 World Cup legacy projects.
